Medical Technology & Pharmaceutics
Applications & Measurement Solutions
High-resolution optical 3D metrology is indispensable in the manufacture of instruments, implants and other medical devices. Bruker Alicona measuring solutions enable the automatic area measurement of shape and roughness.
Applications of optical 3D metrology in the medical industry
>> High resolution measurement
of dental implants' roughness, including those on thread roots, knee, hip or spinal disc implants
>> Complete measurement
of surgical drills, milling cutters, etc.
>> Measurement of pills and capsules
Simple and visible verification against imitations, determination of slip properties through area-based measurement of surface characteristics
>> Quality assurance
of orthodontic brackets, packaging products and materials, blister machines and compontens e.g. sealing tools, heating plates and sealing rollers
of surface finish and quality of surgical instruments and instrument tables

Dimensional metrology to increase safety of medical devices, implants and pharmaceutics
Non-contact, dimensional measurement enables a number of time-saving measurements in quality assurance. Check out the following material to find out more details on optical 3D measurement solutions used in all stages of the manufacturing process of medical devices.
Less wear, longer durability - optical measurement of implants
Orthopedic implants are among the most important medical innovations of our time. They improve the quality of life for people of all ages. Read in this whitepaper how to meet new metrological requirements with the use of high-resolution optical 3D metrology.
Form and roughness measurement with the InfiniteFocus at the University Clinic for Dentistry Graz
In this interview with Dr. Martin Koller you will learn how the optical 3D measuring system InfiniteFocus is used for form and surface roughness measurement of natural teeth, implants and printed metals at the University Clinic for Dentistry & Oral Health in Graz.
Form and roughness measurement with one system
In this webinar, you will learn more about current applications in selected key markets such as medical technology, tooling and aerospace.
Medical technology: A customer from the medical technology sector uses the optical µCMM not only for the measurement of high-gloss knee implants but also for the lateral probing of vertical surfaces (Vertical Focus Probing)
Measurement of a high-gloss knee implant
This measurement report shows how the optical µCMM is used not only for the measurement of high-gloss knee implants but also for the lateral probing of vertical surfaces (Vertical Focus Probing). Among other things, you can see which parameters are used for quality assurance in medical technology, such as distance measurements and form/position tolerances.
Measurement of cardiac components
This measurement report shows how the InfiniteFocusSL measures edges, surface roughness, geometric form, and edge radii of three middle holes. The measurement capabilities of the InfiniteFocusSL is shown on two samples, A and B.
Quality assurance in medical technology
Get to know more about:
- GD&T measurement and parametric inspection of bone screws and bone screw drivers
- How to achieve form and roughness measurements of the implant's surface, even on steep flanks and at the groove ground of the implant's thread
- How to numerically verify stability and biocompatibility of implants.
- Full form and cutting edge measurement of surgical drillls, bone milling cutters and other surgical instruments and much more...
The measuring object is an implant, measured with the InfiniteFocusSL and a rotation unit (IF Real3D).
Two measurements were made, one to measure the body of the implant, one to measure the top of it. Typical parameters as thread or angles are measured.
The Measurement of Medical Devices using Focus Variation
This application note from Huddersfield University describes how a Bruker Alicona InfiniteFocusG5 system is being used to measure wear on medical devices. It describes the process and what advantages it offers over conventional stylus based systems.
